Manitou Springs is a mountain town six miles from Colorado Springs in El Paso, County, Colorado. It was founded in 1872 and named after the mineral springs. The town is 17 miles from Colorado Springs airport and 75 miles from Denver airport. The town is a National Register of Historic Places listing, and it is one of the largest districts.
Manitou Springs has restaurants, hotels, bed and breakfasts, and gift shops for people to explore and enjoy. There is a city park with a playground and access to the spring water.
The water contains traces of lithium, magnesium, and phosphate. Native Americans say the natural carbonation of the water comes from the “breath of the Great Spirit, Manitou.” The spring water was traditionally known for its healing powers.
Manitou Springs is located near the base of Pike's Peak. Visitors can take a cog train to the top of Pike's Peak, and listen to a guided tour provided by the conductor.
Soda Springs Pavilion hosts special events, such as a silent disco. During the summer, there is a free concert series.
The Manitou Cliff Dwellings are another popular spot for visitors. They are a replica of the cave dwellings that Native Americans inhabited. The Anasazi museum and dwellings were built in 1904, and they were open to the public in 1907.
Cave of the Winds Mountain Park is also near Manitou Springs. They were discovered in 1881. It is located on US Highway 24 near the cliff dwellings. There are guided tours of the caves daily, which are 500 million-year-old underground caves. Guests can use the zip line that goes over a gorge or use a ropes course.
Garden of the Gods is another major attraction in the area. It is 1,300 acres of sandstone formations with a visitor center and hiking trails.
