Start early. If you start in the morning you'll catch shade through the first half of the loop and then be done before the hottest part of the day. This trail offers a wide range of environments, including cool, "woodsy" sections, as well as the usual brush found in this area. About 5 1/2 miles in you'll have a chance to climb to Inspiration Point, where there's beautiful views of the ocean if you look West, and views of Sherwood Lake if you look East. Even the road to the trailhead is an adventure (narrow, windy roads, with many motorcycles cruising up and down the roads). Don't be afraid of the distance - most of the hike is flat or downhill (although the first mile is pretty much all uphill).Fairly crowded on weekends, so get there early. Lots of canopy for shade, Split Rock is a great place to stop, refuel and rest.
