The Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove is one of only five sites in the state that has counts of over 10,000 butterflies annually. Thousands of vibrant orange and black Monarch Butterflies each year flock to Pismo State Beach, a location essential to their successful migration, seeking shelter from the freezing northern winters.
This place is time limited, October to February, if what you want to do is see butterflies. For sure in February 2019, there was no shortage of them. But this place has so much more to offer. There are several dunes, a beach, lots and lots of natural beauty, like really interesting trees and wild dune plants. There is a large sandy beach just behind it, and if you’re up for a long walk, there’s the pier and board walk just down the road from it. You could make it a really fun visit, and it’s all for free!
The grove is easily accessible from CA State Highway 1 at the south boundary of the city limits of Pismo Beach.
