The small town of Llangollen in North Wales is one of the most charming communities in the United Kingdom. A river runs through the heart of the town; the perfect place to take a stroll or even have a swim on warmer days.
There is also the opportunity to kayak downstream, with quite a powerful current making for an exhilarating experience. The high street is filled with quaint shops selling souvenirs, clothes and second-hand books as well as fresh, local produce. There are a number of cafés on offer, ranging from traditional tearooms serving Welsh food to higher end restaurants and a delightful bakery that has a phenomenal choice of sweet and savoury pastries.
There is a library on the high street that regularly hosts cultural events, and a highlight of the Llangollen calendar is the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod, a music festival. Famous names that have performed there include Katherine Jenkins, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Kiri Te Kanawa.
The perfect end to a day trip in Llangollen is to drive to the nearby Horseshoe Pass, a road winding through the hills in the shape of a horseshoe. The tree-covered hills, which are populated by plenty sheep, are particularly stunning in autumn as the leaves turn to coppery shades of orange. On the top of the hill at the end of the Horseshoe Pass is the Ponderosa Café, where you can get spectacular views of the beautiful scenery as well as a bite to eat. The surrounding hills are frequented by keen hikers and motorcyclists alike.
