The road on Tahiti Iti's northern coast runs for 18 km (11 miles) to Tautira's large village, which sits on its own small peninsula. Captain Cook anchored his second visit to Tahiti in 1773 in the bay off Tautira. His ships landed on the reef while one night the crews were leaving. He succeeded in getting them off, but in the process he lost several anchors. One of them was found in 1978 and is now on display at the Tahiti and Her Islands Museum on the island's west side. A year after Cook landed in Tautira, a Peruvian Spanish ship named the Aguila landed here, claiming the island for Spain as its captain.
Tahiti was claimed for a European power for the third time. He also put two priests from the Franciscans ashore. A year later, the Aguila returned, but the priests had enough of Tahiti and returned to Peru. Upon entering the village, bear left and drive along the picturesque coastal road to the general store where you can buy a cold soft drink and snack. I usually take my break at La Plage de Maui snack bar on the south coast of Tahiti Iti if you can hold out longer.
