The Isle of Wight is an island off the south coast of England best known for its dinosaur fossils and Osborne House, where Queen Victoria died. But its most impressive natural wonder is without a doubt the multi-coloured sands and rock formations of Alum Bay beach on the island’s western coast. The different coloured sands are a result of geological movements and the formation of various oxidised iron compounds present in the sands. Small plastic figurines filled with the different coloured sands are the souvenir of the day at Alum Bay, and make a cute keepsake from this natural marvel.
Aside from a pleasant stroll along the coloured sands the most popular activities at Alum Bay include taking a cable car between the cliff top and the beach below, allowing for stunning views across the Solent. There is a small amusement park on top of the cliff that is filled with charming Victorian-style attractions, including rides, games and glass blowing demonstrations. The historical themes are also present in the Marconi monument, marking the place where the famous scientist experimented in radio transmissions that led to the modern technology we enjoy today.

The beach and cliff top attractions aside, the Needles are also a brilliant reason to visit Alum Bay. The three chalk white rock formations that make up the Needles are located a little way out to sea and can be visited up close in boat cruises that leave from the bay. There is a charming red and white striped lighthouse just next to the Needles and the more adventurous traveller can choose to kayak up to these spectacular rocks.
