Words can't describe the beauty of Sunshine Meadows and in particular the view of the lakes from the top, behind the Standish Chairlift. The gonodola and one chairlift are operating on an experimental basis on weekends in 2016. Check to see if this continues in other years. This makes the mountain very accessible. There is a 0.5 km walk on a gravel trail to the lookout, which outdoes even the Lake Louise gondola and Peto Lake views. There are many trails and hikes of varying length and intensity. In about an hour, if you're fit, you could walk down and round the lakes where the wild flowers bloom in profusion. Even if you can't do the steep hills of the hike to the lake, the view from the platform is worth the price of admission. This is only accessible on weekends via the chairlift to those who can't hike a steep hill. During the week there is a bus to the gondola top, where the hotel is located. To get higher you need to hike. I saw a fox and a deer from the platform as well as many different species of birds. Bears are a common sight, but we didn't see one. The Mad Trapper's Saloon restaurant is also open on weekends. The food is good and beer is available. You can sit outside and enjoy the mountain views, or sit inside if you're chilly. The temperature can be significantly lower at the top of the mountain so bring a jacket even on a warm day. Bring lots of sunscreen and water as well. You'll need proper footware, since even though there are paths, it is rugged and steep. You must stay on the paths to protect the fragile alpine environment. Parks Canada has cameras installed and rangers patrolling to make sure people are not destroying this treasure. This area is not wheelchair accessible, but if you want to go you can! Contact Rocky Mountain Adaptive Sports and ask them about a custom hike tailored for you. No matter how limited your mobility, they will take you anywhere you want to go.
