Waiheke Island is 21 kilometres from the Auckland CBD and is accessible via ferry. There are two ferries to choose from: a passenger ferry that leaves from the Ferry Terminal on Queen Street and the car ferry that leaves from Matiatia Bay. Either ferry ride takes approximately 40 minutes.
The island is world-famous for the beautiful vineyards, olive groves and golden sand beaches.
For those that are seeking a day at the beach, the best ones are in Oneroa, Palm Beach and Onetangi. All are safe swimming beaches that also have cafes and restaurants on the water front. Further down the island is a nature reserve, which requires access by a 4WD vehicle. There are pristine beaches, enclaves and native forest to explore.
Those looking for a more taste bud enhancing experience will be spoiled for choice with a haven of world-class vineyards, all which come with gorgeous water views. Located all near each other, renting a bike to get from vineyard to vineyard is a convenient choice. Stonyridge and Cable Bay are the two most popular selections for their quality of food, wine and vantage points.
There are also adrenaline-filled activities on the island, including kayaking through the calm enclaves, snorkelling in the clear waters or zip-lining through the lush forests.
Another great way to explore the island is utilising the hop-on-hop-off bus. This will allow for the most ground to be covered on Waiheke Island during the day. For those wanting to extend their stay, there is a range of accommodation options to suit every budget.
