When people think about Hamburg, Germany, the first thing that pops in mind is probably ground meat products, and maybe hats, but never model trains. Well, if you thought that these have nothing to do with one another, wait until you visit the largest model train installation in the world, the Miniatur Wunderland.
Miniatur Wunderland is not only an installation of tiny train models but also people, towns, villages, bridges, and landscapes. Being the largest miniature exhibit in the world, Hamburg's Wunderland receives a significant number of tourists. You might think that these kind of things are only amusing to children, but the truth is that it's actually the adult model train fanatics from all around the world who visit this place most frequently.
Miniatur Wunderland encompasses 11.850 square feet of miniature replicas of the railway in Scandinavia, Austria, and Germany. And when I say railway, I don't only mean the train line, but the entire landscape including mountains, rivers, houses, and bridges. Besides this stunning part of Europe that is logically connected in the real world and can teach you a lot of geography, they also made a miniature of Mount Rushmore in the US, with the train system that runs through the area.
Miniatur Wunderland is an impressive example of detailed engineering that looks so alive and real that it is unbelievable at moments.
The most exciting part of this place are the details that go as far as cable cars that climb the snowy mountains of Switzerland, container ships unloading their merchandise, and outstanding lighting. To control all the moving cars, the people working at the Wunderland use 170 computers, and as a result we get to observe an entire miniature world that works flawlessly.
The best thing to do before visiting is to book an online ticket through their website and make sure you have a secure entrance to Miniatur Wunderland.
