Located at the most northern tip of New Zealand, Cape Reinga is the spiritual place where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet. The stunning sight of seeing the two clashing hues of blue collide is reason enough to visit. It is also a place where Maori spirits are believed to begin their final journey, so many visitors to Cape Reinga have a deep emotional attachment to the area. One of the most mystical features of Cape Reinga is the one gnarled pohutukawa tree that at the very tip of the cape and believed to be more than 800 years old. 

To reach Cape Reinga is quite a journey, with the shortest starting point being the town of Kaitaia, which is still over an hour and a half away. During the drive to Cape Reinga there are many other sights and activities to enjoy, including driving along 90 Mile beach and sand dune surfing from colossal sand dunes at Te Paki. The sand dune surfing is best enjoyed with a body board and the hike to the top requires reasonable levels of fitness. 

There are many different walks in Cape Reinga, including an easy 10-minute walk to the lighthouse or a three day coastal track going along the coastline of Cape Reinga to Te Werahi and Twilight beaches, where camping is allowed. Spirits bay is the most sacred location at Cape Reinga, which is a stunning bay that is much more isolated from the normal tourist crowds at the lighthouse. This bay also allows camping.
