Many little towns have quaint and quirky things to offer a visitor. Washington, North Carolina, affectionately referred to as Little Washington, is a small town with a historic downtown, scenic waterfront, and southern charm. It is a great place for a day trip or quiet weekend getaway. The waterfront is located on the Pamlico River where it widens and slows down forming the Pamlico Tar River Estuary, which provides a safe place for many aquatic species to breed and grow before heading out the ocean.
A short walkway travels along the harbor, which holds gently rocking sailboats and distant marshy lands. To the other side of the walkway is the historic downtown area. This area boasts of top-notch restaurants from world-class seafood to the locally famous hot dog shop, but the park on the waterfront is also a wonderful spot to bring your own food for a picnic. Art galleries, quirky antique shops, a performing arts center, and family-owned stores with a distinctly local flare dot the main streets of downtown Little Washington.
Spending late afternoon downtown and on the waterfront is a great way to unwind after a morning spent walking at Goose Creek State Park or paddling on some of the over 300 miles of paddle trails in and around Little Washington. Goose Greek State Park is located between the two historic towns of Washington and Bath. It offers serene boardwalk hiking through wetlands, primitive camping, paddle trails, and great views of the water. Nature enthusiasts of any age or skill can enjoy the trails here. The paddle trails around Little Washington are generally very peaceful. These waters move slowly, unhindered, through the coastal forests and small towns. The dark waters beautifully reflect the sky and tree line of cypress, pine, and oak trees peppered with Spanish moss.
