The Piatra Craiului National Park is an incredible natural spectacle in Romania. Boasting a dramatic 25 kilometre limestone ridge, overabundant forests and glacial lakes and wildlife that includes wolves, bears, deer, eagle owls and bats, a trip to Romania isn’t complete without visiting this historic nature reserve.
Hikers can choose between a short day walk to a multi-day trek through the Park’s ridge trail that starts either at Plaiul Foji or Cumatura, with some parts of the trail being challenging yet extremely rewarding. Along the way there are several caves and gorges to explore. It can also be explored by horseback, rock climbing and mountain biking.
There is also the opportunity to experience the humble rural Romanian lifestyle, with the traditional villages of Magura, Pestera, Ciocanu and Sirnea scattered along the way. All of these villages have local pensions that provide accommodation and local meals.
The Piatra Craiului National Park is also booming with incredible selections of flora and fauna. There are over 300 fungi species, 270 butterfly species, 110 bird species, 17 bat species, along with three-toed woodpeckers and Ural owls.
Complimenting the natural phenomenon that occurs in this Park are several historical buildings that can be explored. These includes the Fagaras Fortress and Rasnov Fortress.
No matter what portion of the Park is explored, the views of the surrounding mountains, forest and grassy hills will leave you speechless.
