Take a dark walk through Nahuku, known as the Thurston Lava Tube, a 500-year-old lava cave on Kilauea Crater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park at an altitude of 3,900 feet. When a lava river gradually builds solid walls and a ceiling, lava caves like this are formed. A cave is formed when the lava flow stops and the last one goes downhill. These caves can be a few feet high and only yards long, or with high ceilings they can stretch for miles. There are several lava tubes that can be visited around the island, but Nahuku is the easiest to reach and a fantastic example of a massive lava cave.
