Externsteine, translated as the "Stones of the Egge" or, less convincingly, the "Star Stones," is a series of pillar-like rock formations jutting up from the surrounding Teutoburg forest. As you approach Externsteine you are immediately taken with the scale of the rocks, and then you are further blown away by the area's incredible history. Rock carvings among the oldest in Germany, twisty steps up to impressive panoramic views over the forest and lake, and carved chapels and bridges complete the experience.
