The Hakone Shrine is a Japanese Shinto shrine on the shores of Lake Ashi in the town of Hakone in the Ashigarashimo District of Kanagawa Prefecture. It is also known as the Hakone Gongen.Don't miss this relatively small but picturesque and historic sintoist shrine. The bright red temple gates on the lake add greatly memorable visual to beautiful Ashi lake. The shrine is about 10 minute walk from final cruise stop and the walk is up the mountain, the route is lined with cedars and red lampposts. Very beautiful. The shrine is a part of old Tokaido road between Kyoto and Edo.
Shrine is bright red among the green scenery. Wash your hands before approaching, many people also rinse their mouth. There is an interesting feature with heads of dragons related to legend about the lake. Not much English signage.
Definitely worth visiting if doing hakone loop.
