Located close to Lagarfljót lake and right across the Hallormsstaðarskógur forest, Hengifoss is waterfall 145 meters above sea level waterfall . The waterfall is composed of beautiful basalt columns, some of which are 30-meter long making them amongst the highest basalt columns in the country.
You can see the waterfall in the distance - with a nice well-marked trail leading to the base of the falls. The walk at times is very steep and is more difficult coming down than it is going up, but you will be rewarded for your efforts on this hike. The views of the waterfalls, the sheep in the nearby fields, and the streams that run by as you walk past are just enchanting.
