Take a short walk from Blue Ridge Parkway to enjoy panoramic views of the Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower, located near Mt. Pisgah in the Pisgah National Forest. The view is better than from the top of Mt. Pisgah, with half a hike (only one mile round trip)! Although the top of the tower is locked, you can climb five stairs just below the top platform. This tower is the tallest USFS lookout tower in western North Carolina, and it is now on the National Register of Historic Places. A few high communication towers share the summit, but only slightly interfere with the panoramic view.
The view of the Blue Ridge Mountain includes a close-up view of the famous Cold Mountain (the peak is only five miles away). It's just 2.5 miles north of Mt. Pisgah. Dogs are allowed on a leash. But many are afraid of climbing the tower. Get there on the trail that starts to the right of the parking area at the metal gate. After the gate stay left on the wide gravel access road (right down the mountain). Steady's going all the way to the tower. Except for the few flowers, there wasn't much to look at. Well worth a hike up, the view from the top of the tower is phenomenal!
