The two towers were built by the cities of Kleve and Cologne, which in the 14th century shared administrative responsibility for Xanten. Once they were joined together by a bridge over the since-filled defensive most of the city. Walking through Xanten, this tower gate is one of the most exciting buildings. During the old days, the Tower Gate was one of the entrances of this little town and watched over the safety of the inhabitants during turbulent times. It's just a short walk from this place to the mill, the market square or the cathedral.
