This place is known by different names such as' La Grande Dune du Pyla' or' Pilat's Great Dune.' It lies about 105 m (about 351 ft) above sea level in the southwest of France on the Atlantic Ocean coast as it emerges abruptly from the surrounding forests.
This is one of Europe's highest sand dunes, estimated to be 6o million m3 of sand.
You can reach La Grande Dune of Pyla by renting a bike from nearby Arcachon town and traveling along the ocean side trail while following the dune signs. There are two parking lots leading down to the dune from a pedestrian path and stairs. Daily trains depart from Bordeaux to Arcachon station, where buses are also available. The climb is a good exercise for your legs to climb the ocean from one side and the green forest from the other, you're in the middle of this beauty.
