San Gregorio State Beach in San Mateo is an open beach break that has fairly steady surf. This beach offers the best conditions for surfing during the Summer. Groundswells more frequent than wind swells and the ideal swell direction is from the southwest. Even when there are waves, it's not likely to be crowded.
You do have to pay to park here, but it's worth it. There is tons of driftwood on the beach and it's fun to create driftwood art. It's a bit difficult to get down to and the day we were there we couldn't access the main Beach due to a lagoon, but the little beach was still fun. For the surf thou the best wind direction is from the east. Groundswells more frequent than wind swells and the ideal swell direction is from the southwest. Watch out for rips and sharks.
