Lake McKenzie on Fraser Island, located 100 meters above sea level, is one of Australia's most beautiful and well-known freshwater lakes.
The lake is a "perched lake," which means that it exists well above the water table and it consists only of pure rainwater. Together with the high acidity levels in the lake, this unique environment makes the water unsuitable for almost all forms of plant and fish life.
The lake is extremely pure without natural plant and animal waste. Oddly enough, the lake is too pure to sustain natural life otherwise inhabiting its waters. The picnic areas are neat and clean, but it is the lake that is the centre of attention here and it is most worthy of the bumpy drive in.
You can’t go to Fraser Island without a visit to lake McKenzie, great for a swim for the whole family.
