A popular fountain sculpture by Alexander Stirling Calder, son of the City Hall artist, belongs to the center of Logan Square.
Swann Memorial Fountain, designed with architect Wilson Eyre, commemorates Dr. Wilson Cary Swann, founder of the Fountain Society of Philadelphia.
Adapting the river god sculpture tradition, Calder created large Native American figures to symbolize the major local waterways in the area: the Delaware River (a man), the Schuylkill River (a woman) and the Wissahickon Creek (a girl).
The group is completed by frogs, tortoises, a fish and two swans — puns on Dr. Wilson Cary Swann's name.TIP: You can park behind the library to the North as there is not much parking to the South.
