Pontatoc Canyon Trail is a 3.8 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Tucson, Arizona and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is best used from October until May. This incredible views, along with a stunning workout, hiking the 5.5 mile Pontatoc Canyon Trail is a must. Expect wash crossings and steep climbing and bring water, sunscreen, and at least some sort of energy bar. Park at the Richard McKee Finger Rock Trailhead (parking for the Pontatoc Ridge Trail, Pontatoc Canyon Trail and Finger Rock Trail). Take a right at the signed junction at the top of the hill (left for the Finger Rock Trail). After crossing Pontatoc Canyon for the first time (there are a number of wash crossing before crossing Pontatoc Canyon) the trail becomes steeper. Take a left at the signed junction (right for the Pontatoc Ridge Trail). For clarification, if you took the right fork to the Pontatoc Ridge trail, this listing is for the other trail that goes off to the left. A brutal hike indeed, the serious outdoorsman indeed. The trail is a steady climb and well marked until about mile 2.5 or 3 where it descends to the creek bed and then climbs up the Northface of the canyon. Very steep and hard to follow for the rest of the trail 1 or 1.5 more miles. Yeah, there were good views and all but it really is a brutal hike with tons of cacti in the middle of the trail and loose rocks abound. Consider yourself warned.
