Portland Bill Lighthouse has been standing for the past one hundred and eleven years. The distinctive red and white tower first shone its brilliant four flashes of light every twenty seconds and has a range of 25 nautical miles which has guided passing vessels through the dangerous waters around Portland Bill as well as acting as a waymark for ships navigating the English Channel.
Portland Bill Lighthouse is open to the public, and you can visit the Visitors Centre to see the lamp at the very top which is about 157 steps.
