The statue of the Virgin enjoys a dramatic location surrounded by water and crashing waves. On the beach path and across a metal footbridge you can walk to it. Make sure you enjoy the views in all directions, including down in the water where you will see lots of fish and other marine activities.
Napoléon III decided, according to history, to use this rocky point as a port anchor point. It was connected originally through a wooden footbridge, which was later replaced by a metal bridge.
The statue of the Virgin was built in 1865, called Le Rocher de la Vierge. Paths lead to the Rocher through beautiful gardens and across the bridge. It's hard to miss this in Biarritz because it's right on the shore walk. It's worth walking across the bridge to the rock where there's the virgin's statue. The real attraction is the views of Biarritz and the coast. It's good to visit it if you can as a rough sea gives a different feeling to a calm sea in different weather conditions. Go for another view of Biarritz at night as well. Here the little train stops and nearby is the aquarium. Walk through the bridge at night and with the rocks illuminated below it gives a great optical illusion to look down through the bridge's slats.
