Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso is a Roman Catholic cloister situated in the district of Leggiuno, in the Province of Varese and the area of Lombardy, Italy.
It is located on a rough edge on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore. The monastery can be reached on foot by descending a long winding stairway or by taking an elevator or by several ferry services or boats that dock at the pier.
The hermitage itself is quite small and only takes A short time to visit. We were lucky that it was not full of other tourists, so we felt the peace of the place. We also liked the antique and HUGE grape and olive press. Do look out for it.
Free car park, restaurant, and toilets on the top level. You pay 1 Euro to go down the elevator and the same price to go up, or you can walk the 240 steps. We walked. Stupidly. Amazing place, you will not regret the visit. You can arrive by ferry too, but the time you visit.
