The Port Arthur Historic Site story is a story about a lot of people, places and moments. Port Arthur has been a place of hardship and punishment, a place of opportunity, and a place of recreation throughout its long history. Now it is one of the most important heritage destinations in Australia, where the story of the colonial history of Australia is written in stone and brick. The site's admission includes an engaging interactive museum and walking access to most areas. (There is a buggy doing the rounds and eliminating the need for too much walking.) There are several options, including guided tours and trips to the islands, as well as a guided tour of Dead Island and Puer Boys Prison. A souvenir shop, cafeteria and restaurant are available (of course).
