This is Scotland’s largest and most magnificent medieval church. Even in its ruinous state, the cathedral remains a prominent landmark highly visible from the sea. These castle ruins are near the famous golf course and has quite a tumultuous history, The "hole" used for a jail cell is rather shocking when one realizes that political prisoners and those with opposing theological views were kept or killed in this small, impossible to escape, compartment.
A few kings lived at the castle for a portion of their lives, and King James III was born here. The Protestant evangelist George Wishart was imprisoned and burned at the stake here. The cathedral visit is best combined with a trip to the castle close by - combined tickets are available. It is a castle that should be in the top 20 in Scotland to visit
