The ruins of Thurant Castle reach on a hill's of the villages of Alken on the Moselle in Germany. One of my favorite castles. Still mostly occupied but visitors can explore a large part of the castle. Beautiful with flowers everywhere: a pleasant garden atmosphere. The views of the Mosel River from the castle is spectacular.
You can drive an hour from Spangdahlem to get there, and it was worth the trip. There are also three other castles on the way to Thurant Castle so you could probably make a day of it if you're up and out early enough.
There is a small cafe located inside the castle where you can grab a beer and a snack. There are loads of nice cafes on the Mosel on the way back.
