With rail and direct bus links to Tokyo, Lake Kawaguchiko (almost) is the most readily available of the Fuji Five Lakes. A hot spring resort town with different tourist sights of Mount Fuji is situated around the eastern part of the lake.
From the southern coasts of the lake, you can witness the finest views of Mount Fuji particularly during the cherry blossom period around mid-April and the autumn colors around the first quarter of November.
Be advised that the mountain is not always noticeable due to the heavy fog and visibility tends to be best in the early mornings (usually before 9 am) and late evenings, whereas clouds often obstruct views even on good climate days during the daytime, particularly during the hazy winter months.
It takes 2-3 days to visit all the places around the lake with hop on-hop off retro bus. You can save some budget by buying Fuji-Hakone pass from Odakyu sightseeing counter at Shinjuku JR station. From the southern coasts of the lake, the finest views of Mount Fuji can be purchased and are particularly amazing during the cherry blossom period around mid-April and the autumn colors around the first quarter of November.
