The biggest and most varied national historic site in Canada is Hatley Park in Greater Victoria. A splendid castle was constructed in 1908 by former British Columbia Premier and coal magnate, James Dunsmuir, at the center of Hatley Park.
Authentic and beautifully maintained, located on the northern edge of Vancouver Island, this 565-acre Edwardian property is just 25 minutes from downtown Victoria.
This was part of a town tour that included the castle of Craigdarroch. Because of a private function, the couldn't access Hatley Castle or part of the grounds so you might want to check before you go. The trek straight up to the beach around the castle and the gardens is worth the drive and the images. For a number of films, the mansion served as a filming place, the first being The Changeling since 1980. MacGyver, Poltergeist: The Legacy, Generation X from 1996, Masterminds, The Mole, Smallville, The X-Men series, and most recently Deadpool by Ryan Reynolds are other films that have been filmed here.
