A Skyspace is an art work we're entering — and then we're staying to look at the light, think and move. Contrasts within the installation between artificial light and the changing external atmosphere affect the sky's appearance. Colors are changing and appearing more painterly. There is an intensification of movement. The sky is shimming and pulsating and sometimes going down into the space to meet us. James Turrell reveals the immensity of the natural world and the sheer beauty of' divine' architecture by asking the viewer to take the time to notice these subtleties. A Skyspace marks the transition from night to day, and at dawn and dusk the work is at its most dramatic and complex.
